Diesterweg-Stipendium

The scholarship project "Diesterweg-Stipendium" by the Foundation Polytechnische Gesellschaft Frankfurt am Main supports migrant children in the transfer from elementary school to intermediate or higher secondary school. The participating children are in need of an improvement of their German skills. According to their teachers and the foundation, however, they have "good educational potentials". The scholarship includes various measures; among them are academy days, German-language courses, excursions and an education fund. A specific characteristic of the "Diesterweg-Stipendium" is the inclusion of the parents in the measures and the individual counselling of them. The goal is to enable parents for the competent support of the education of their children and to motivate them for the social engagement in society. In the course of the project siblings have increasingly been included into the measures.

The efms was evaluating the project. In the programme evaluation, interviews with the project manager and the responsible board member about the goals and the theory of the project were arranged. The process evaluation was performed amongst others by interviews with the project manager, feedback papers from the children and parents academies and participatory observation. The effect evaluation included the analysis of documents, school grades and reports, written questioning of teachers and pupils, feedback papers for children and parents and qualitative inerviews. Based on continuous results of the evaluation the efms delivered proposals for the improvement and enhancement of the programme.
