Migration Review 2003 by the Commissioner of the Federal Government for Migration, Refugees and Integration

In accordance with publication No. 14/2389 of the German Parliament, a migration report is to be presented annually by the Federal Government. The report is to cover all migrant groups and provide a comprehensive overview of the annual development and causes of migration inflows and outflows. Following the guidelines of the Federal Government, the Migration Review 2003 is mainly similar in structure to the Migration Review 2001, which was published in November 2001, and presents in a concise and easily accessible form the migration flows in Germany in the period 2000 to 2002.

For this purpose the migration inflows and outflows are analysed according to quantitative proportions, countries of origin and destination, nationalities and age and gender structure. In addition to this the individual types of migration and migration groups (EU internal migration; migration for the purpose of family reunification; "Spätaussiedler" (ethnic German immigrants); Jewish migrants from the former Soviet Union; inflows of asylum seekers; war, civil war and de facto refugees; and various forms of labour migration) are described in detail as regards their quantitative proportions.

The account of the migration inflows and outflows in Germany is supplemented by a European comparison. What is new here is the chapter about the possible consequences of the enlargement of the EU for the migration process in Germany and the chapter about unregulated migration.

The report presents detailed statistics and graphs which are supplemented by comments made from a social-sciences, content-related and methodological prespective.
