Prof. Dr. Friedrich Heckmann


Professor of Sociology at the University of Bamberg, director of the efms. Studied sociology, history and economics at the universities of Münster, Kiel, Erlangen-Nürnberg and Lawrence (USA). M.A. in sociology from the University of Kansas in Lawrence (USA) in 1967; Ph. D. in sociology from the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1972; habilitation in sociology at the university of Bamberg in 1980. Professor of sociology at the Hamburg School of Economics and Political Science 1982-1992. Since 1992, professor at the Otto-Friedrich-University of Bamberg. Policy counselling and expert opinion author in the field of migration and integration for the German parliament, the German government, communities, associations, unions and public organizations.

Area of work

Prof. Heckmann is director of the european forum for migration studies (efms) at the University of Bamberg. He directs the institute's research projects. Main topics of his scientific work are sociology of migration and migration policy, integration of migrants, sociology of inter-ethnic relations and social structure of Germany.
