Transatlantic Discourse on Integration: "The Impact of the Media on the Integration Process in Europe and the United States", December 4, 2006

The workshop on the impact of the media on the integration process has taken place on December 4th, 2006 in Berlin. The aim of this expert workshop was to bring together theoretical and practical insights on the role of the media in the integration process of migrants and to promote the exchange of European and American expertise. We have examined the relationship between the media and the integration of migrants from three angles: First, what are the media preferences of migrants? Does the use of ethnic media promote or inhibit integration? Second, how do the media report on migrants and integration-related topics? What effects does this coverage have on migrants and the pluralist society? Third, what challenges do migrants working in the media (e.g. journalists, producers) face? The one-day seminar have brought together European and American academics, policymakers, and representatives of non-governmental organizations and the media. The workshop has been held in English.
