PROMINSTAT - Promoting comparative quantitative research on migration and integration in Europe

The main objective of PROMINSTAT was to promote comparative quantitative research in the field of migration and integration. In the scope of this project, technical information on statistical datasets and national data collection systems in 27 European countries were systematically collected and analysed. In addition, the possibilities for and the limitations on conducting comparative research in a number of different thematic areas were explored.

Funding: European Commission (6th Framework Programme)

Migration Reviews

From 1999 until 2004 the efms has continuously compiled the Migration Review. This report analyses in a compact form the statistical data regarding migration for a particular year. The data are structured according to the extent of inflows and outflows, countries of origin and destination as well as the age and gender structure of the migrants. The Migration Review describes the various types of migration in detail in their magnitudes:

  • Internal migration within the EU
  • Family reunification
  • Inflow of immigrants of German origin ("Aussiedler")
  • Jewish immigrants
  • Inflows of asylum seekers
  • Labour migration
  • Foreign students

Furthermore the Migration Review gives an overview of the legal background. The data about migration in Germany are supplemented by a European comparison.

Since 2005 the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is responsible for the publication of the annual Migration Reviews.

Data - Facts - Trends

On behalf of the Federal Commissioner for Migration, Refugees and Integration the efms compiles a series of modules on various subjects, which contain statistics and background information on foreigners in Germany.

Migration in Europe - Data and Background

The objective of this project was to compile a compendium of data on the migration situation in ten selected European countries, which includes basic information on migration flows and a critical discussion of methodology and is application-oriented. The resulting handbook includes systematically comparable data on the entry, structure and integration of migrants as well as political, legal and sociological analyses which provide assistance in interpreting the data.

Comparing national data sources in the field of migration and integration - COMPSTAT

COMPSTAT is a pilot study aimed at gathering, editing and analysing all the information available in eight European countries about data that is collected on a regular basis referring in any way to the integration of migrants and their families.

Indicators of migration - on measuring the scale and types of migration

The project provided a critical review of the existing statistics on migration. Migration is a phenomenon which has to be recorded and depicted in the official statistics comprehensively and in all its aspects.

The project developed theoretically sound indicators which allow migration to be measured adequately. The project was not restricted to officially recorded migration processes only, however, but also focuses on non-documented, illegal migration flows which elude statistical registration.

Migration and Integration in Numbers

The project presents types of migration and their magnitudes and explains the various dimensions of the integration of migrants. For this purpose available figures and indicators from various sources were examined and analysed. The genesis of the data and the legal basis of the figures were presented and were related to their possible interpretations. A large number of tables and graphs with critical assessments regarding their significance and ways of interpretation are the core of the project.
